Fringe Episode 102 - Walter's Numbers

      Email Post       9/17/2008 03:57:00 AM

Walter makes several references to numbers in "The Same Old Story":
  • The combination to his garage lock was 31, 41, 59 - the first six digits of Pi (3.14159)

  • Instead of counting sheep, Walter counts out the Fibonacci numbers - 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55

  • Before Peter begins singing "Row Row Row Your Boat", Walter begins reciting more Fibonacci numbers, though out-of-order - 1, 233, 377, 2, 21, 610

however walter only says "1" once, and doesn't say "5" (where the correct sequence is ...2,3,5,8,13...

would anyone have an idea of what the last set of numbers mean? I can't believe they are random...!

thebruce, he definitely says "0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55"

yes, the second 1 is there, faintly, but he's not saying "5".

Anyhow, Caterpillar at Unfiction noted that the 2nd set is actually the continued sequence. He's just drawn the numbers out, so it sounds like single digit/double digit. two-thirty-three, three-seven(ty)-seven, etc.

so the actual sequence he's said is:
0 1 1 2 3 8 13 21 34 55 (missing the 5)
1 233 377 221 610 (skipped 89 and 144, and 1 and 221 don't belong)

confirmed, a few times :)

TheBruce,

I never said he said "5"...

That makes snece for the second sequence, but if you make it 1 233 377 2 21 610, then those are all Fibonacci numbers... just not in order, which is better than having 221, which doesn't fit at all...

maybe the numbers don't mean a thing and are just there to confuse us.

Actually using the clue of the missing five in the Fibonacci sequence, I was able to find a hidden page in the ARG.

That's basically how we found it too ;)

I get the impression that Abrams likes giving the occasional tip-of-the-hat to the law of fives (which is directly correlated to the 23 enigma). If you notice, 5 keeps popping up here and there in Lost even though it's not one of the Valencetti numbers.

So I think leaving 5 out of the Fibonacci sequence was a way of drawing attention to its importance.

Now we know the random Fibonacci numbers were Walter's safety deposit boxes.
