Fringe Episode 106: The Observer

      Email Post       10/22/2008 01:45:00 AM

The Observer was spotted at the David Esterbrook forum. Could he be the one that dropped the dime on Olivia?

You can see all of The Observer appearances here.

This kinda bugs me. For Olivia being the amazingly perceptive person she is, how does she over look a large BALD white man with no Eyebrows. . .there cant be more than 20 people in that shot. . .I absolutely love this show, but a couple things are startin to bug me. . lol

i was looking for him the whole episode... completely missed him. i was tired though... good catch.

totally agree with Andy ----- her powers of observation sucked compared to the shows viewers

I am with Josh... totally expected to see this guy and missed it. Even afterwards I was thinking... man they keep introducing little things and then leap-frog spicing them in, but I was wrong.

As far as Andy's comment... yeah I guess... the peripheral shot she probably should have noticed. If they left it to the behind shot it would have been hard to argue.

It's funny, like we are NFL refs checking the instant reply... it's still keeping my interest as a show I want to watch. It's not like there was a camera man in the shot or something :-) (saw that on 24 once with a camera man)

I think they were making it pretty obvious in this ep that Olivia was on edge and distracted because of the father/birthday thing. That's a good reason for her to have missed the Observer.

Well, maybe Olivia had bigger things to worry about than the observer. Also, the guy is just observing. What can he do?

The photos in Patel's office say "Treating and Caring, Your Family for 20 Years." That would take us back to 1988. Could this be important? Also the reception that Estrabrook spoke at the actual location is the 68th Regiment in NYC. Made up to look like a hotel.

when ever something happens the observer has no hat, when ever hes just there, lyk randomly he has a hat, anyone else notice that?! something key happened here, i think

Edward said...

Interesting theory Iceman, but I think the pattern is indoors, the hat is off, outdoors, the hat is on.

ICEMAN said...

yes, but if u look at last weeks observer screenshot, (105) then watch that part he puts on his hat, as he is getting off the elevator, and hes not on the ground floor heading out. to watch it go to this link and watch at roughly 4:30

You can watch it here at aprox. 4:00 plus. And yes, the Observer is putting on his hat while exiting the elevator on what is not the first floor, yet once does not a pattern make, and I'd even go so far as to suggest the dawning of the hat in that scene was more to obscure the Observer's presence from the viewers like us.

Actually, his putting on the hat was what made me notice the Observer in the elevator. I think we can chalk Olivia's tension about receiving (or at that point, NOT yet having received) a card from her ex-Step Father, and the fact that she's currently pretending to be infatuated with Esterbrook (maintaining a cover), as plenty of reason why someone my overlook a bald man. I doubt she was close enough to see he had no eyebrows. And if I saw a bald man with no eyebrows, I would think Chemo before I thought Pattern. (Though she's seen his picture before, so she should be wanting to find him more than anything, too.) She was slightly off her game, and maybe they just wanted to throw the Observer into the episode and didn't particularly care where.

Up until now, the Observer has usually appeared at the "scene of the crime", i.e. where the Pattern has occurred. So, I was looking for him at the diner. (In fact, there was someone with a hat at the diner, but it was obviously NOT the observer), but I didn't think to look for the Observer at the conference. I don't think that Olivia would be on the lookout for him 24/7, especially since he may considered a "good guy", or at least "neutral".

Broyles also got on to Olivia during this episode for letting her passion get in the way of her judgement. Her vision was clouded with her dad, birthday, Estrabrook, etc. This may be reason as to why she didnt notice the Observer.

Somehow I think she was focused on other things. She had seen photograph of the observer but did not see him within feet of her.

The Observer is usually at the scene of some signifficant event ---- either to simply watch it, or effect it's outcome by interacting with it (like saving Walter and Peter in the car accident, or the interaction with Walter and Peter over the Beacon). So what was his purpose here? I'll tell you ----- he's the one who told on Olivia to Broyles. I don't think Broyles knew it was him who called him, but he's the one who ratted her. He did it on purpose, to change the outcome of his environment ... he didn't necessarily have to show up in order to rat her, but he was watching to how she handled ESterbrook to determine whether or not he'd rat her out ...

tallone said...

That's really interesting anon. In the Beacon the Observer called someone to say that it had launched. He may be influencing outcomes but I'm not sure he is calling Broyles.I have another theory but I'm not going to say as yet as it would be a spoiler. However,William Bell and Walter have the same initials. Where is Bell? Nina Sharp knew Bell.Walter has a memory loss. Also ask why the observer and Broyles both have bald heads.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I don't think he called Broyles when the Beacon arrived .... I think he called the torturer dude with the green/red dot watchcap. I thought about Walter being Bell, but I'm not so sure. There would be too many people able to put that connection together somehow --- I mean, Massive Dynamics is one of the largest companies in the Fringe world. You think they could keep that a secret that long and from that many intelligent people? Only if they have some puppet masqeurading as Bell, when it really is Walter.

And yeah, the whole bald thing with Broyles and the Observer is obvious, but I don't think they of the "Same beast". I think the Observer is something of an empty shell so to speak, and he's housing part of Bell's conciousness. I think Walter is probably housing some of Bells conciousness (unbeknownst to himself) as well. My guess is the conciousness is stored in those human chip thingys we saw in episode 3. I figure Nina wanted it so badly for that reason ------

Sarrin said...

but what is there to suggest that the observer has part of bell's consciousness? That's quite a claim to make for something that hasn't even been remotely hinted at. Where did you come up with it?

Anonymous said...

Maybe he has some kind of device that shields him from casual notice? Like you have to look directly at him to notice he's there. Just a fringe theory...
