When Walter returned to St. Claire's, he was visited by visions of himself. Walter even mentions it in his Lab notes.
But was it due to his regressing mental state, or something darker? The young boy Ben Stockton has visions of his dead mother placed into his head - could this be was happened to Walter? Or we could be dealing with something as simple as a Walter clone?

I love that in the universe of this show, a clone counts as something simple. Yay Fringe.
The Walter we have dealt with so far is definitely a clone of the original. Remember that in episode one Peter said, "So you're saying my father is Dr. Frankenstein." I'm saying he is, only he re-created himself for some purpose. That explains his lack of memory, issues, etc. He's incomplete.
I think that the "other walter" is actually William Bell. Both were cloned; maybe clones of "Robert Bishop", whose grave we visited a while back...
Ann, I agree that the other Walter is William Bell -- Perhaps both clones, doing Robert's dirty research in a small lab seventeen years ago...or even better, William Bell is Walter's split personality and Walter, in fact is ALSO William Bell, which is why we've never really seen him yet -- only Nina is now in charge of Massive Dynamic (She's been working there for sixteen years...)
Just because we haven't seen William Bell on the show yet, doesn't mean he's not an actual public figure that most people in the Fringe world would know who he is - like Bill Gates.
Also, if you believe the Fringe comic is "canon", then Walter and William Bell can be seen together in Fringe #1 - Like Minds
I immediately thought the same thing as the egg post... that there was a relationship between the boy seeing something that was not there, manipulating mental images... with what walter experienced. Seems like the scary Dr was very concerned about what Desh might share and very interested in getting walter back.
I think I would go with spit personality theory before the straight clone theary... may be cause I am hoping the show doesn't abuse the clone motif... kind of like masks or doves in mission impossible II & III.
Split personality theory would also seem to indicate that only walter could see the other walter... and we know they drugged him or perhaps the split appears/dissapears like Gollum and Schmeegal when there is trust or absence of trust.
Also wonder if Fringe writers will monitor all our comments and just write something different to makes sure we never guess it :-).
Somehow I think Walter and William Bishop are connected.Who knows? They could be the same person. Or the other Walter could be the old Walter...what I mean by that is some event may have made Walter trip out and that is the Walter we know. What was he like when he was doing the research or floating around Germany drinking the brew? I sure would like to know.
Yes they Fringe writers do monitor comments... they said so in the beginning interviews.
So, did the institute do a switcheroo and release the "other" Walter at the end of the episode? Hence the need for his own space...
a switch doesn't make sense considering Walter's comments about his conversations with Desh
See, the other Walter is actually a terminator sent back in time to kill Olivia to make sure she can't stop Skynet nor the Pattern. CONFIRMED! :D
Well, if you do notice in the lab notes, he carries on a conversation with himself...and to Dennis's remarks about them being seen together in the first comic...this is true, but I'm pretty sure nobody else interacts with William in that instance except Walter. I think the good side of Walter is friends with the Observer because he knew him before he was placed in the hospital, and the observer is a way the old Walter will be able to re-establish his old self with his new self. Minus, of course, William Bell's personality surfacing again...
There's the key Anon...the observer knows...how about Nina Sharp? She knew William Bell as well.
And the fact that both of them have the initials WB. Kinda cool.
I think the other Walter is a split personality/hallucination type thing that came about while Walter was in the loony bin, thus making him... loony.
I agree that Walter has been cloned, but I don't think it's William Bell. I mean this guy is CEO of a multi-billion dollar company...he's famous...I think somebody would have noticed. "Hey Peter, your dad sure looks a lot like that guy on the front of Forbes magazine"
Is it possible that Walter was cloned, merged together psychically with his clone and now he is seeing the real image of himself the same way Olivia sees John?
if a clone was made of Walter…maybe he is the mysterious person who keeps solving the problems Walter never solved, and finishing the experiments that Walter never finished. Who would be better suited to perfect Walter’s work than Walter himself? After all, if there is a clone, he has had 17 years to work out all of the kinks. Is it possible that the real Walter or the clone is off somewhere with William Bell, working on Massive Dynamic projects as we speak?
I think it's interesting that people think William Bell's face is so well known. Have we ever seen a picture of him on any type of media? It seems that the people just know his name, not what he looks like.
When have we ever seen any media in the show, other than the occasional news report. Just because we don't see it on the show, doesn't mean it doesn't exist in the world of Fringe.
Massive Dynamic is a publicly traded company. You can't have a secret, mysterious CEO that no one has ever see unless you are privately owned - like the Hanso Foundation.
Besides, Executive Producer Jeff Pinkner has stated that William Bell is not someone we have already seen.
Has anyone ever wondered if just maybe its so simple as to be Walters "mentally insane" side of himself bringing back bad memories of when he used to be at the hospital, lyk being in his room reminds him of certain things?!
The fact that I find interesting is that people say the writers and producers have said that Bell will be an actor we've never seen -- in actuality, they've simply stated that the actor playing William Bell doesn't know he's playing him yet...
Here...
TVGuide.com: When will we meet William Bell? J.J. said it would be before the end of the first season; is that still true?
Pinkner: Most likely.
TVGuide.com: Have we already met William Bell?
Pinkner: No.
TVGuide.com: When I spoke with executive producer Bob Orci earlier in the season, he mentioned that the actor who is going to play William Bell doesn't even know that they're William Bell. Does that mean you have an actor on standby?
Pinkner: Potentially.
TVGuide.com: Does he think he's going to be on Lost?
Pinkner: He may have already been on Lost.
My personal feeling is that they just haven't decided on an actor yet, which is why the answers are evasive.
I think the other Walter is his Evil unemotional side which 'split' off during his stay in the mental hospital. Walter's personality split into a cold, calculating, evil personality that sees nothing wrong subjecting/killing people for the higher sciences. The current Walter recognizes what he has done and constantly fights the conflicts of his actions against others. He is now split between a caring but regretful absent-minded person and an uncaring calculating rational monster...which wants to take back control of Walter's mind, for his 'higher purpose' of the past.
the man walter sees in his room is most likely a hallucination of his alternate personality (possibly william bell) and not his clone. because the double is always dressed exactly the same as walter
